Tips for choosing and caring for a Christmas Tree and holiday greenery

Tuesday, November 25, 2025
As Thanksgiving nears, locals are shopping for Christmas trees, and Jennifer Brennan, horticulturist with Chalet Home & Garden in Wilmette, shared tips on ABC7 Eyewitness 7 a.m. newscast.

Brennan recommends trees with full, symmetrical branches, a strong fragrance, and sturdy limbs for ornaments. Popular picks include Frasier Fir, White Pine, and Blue Spruce.

To keep greenery fresh, she suggests keeping tree stands full of water, untreated trees last 7-10 days, while anti-transpirant sprays extend freshness up to three weeks. She also offered advice on wreaths, poinsettias, outdoor containers, and holiday gift plants.
