US Army Veteran Miguel Perez Jr. dies 6 years after winning battle for citizenship

CHICAGO (WLS) -- U.S. Army Veteran Miguel Perez Jr. has died, six years after winning his battle for citizenship.

Perez was deported to Mexico but returned to Chicago after Gov. JB Pritzker pardoned him for a drug conviction.



He said post-traumatic stress disorder led to a drug addiction after two tours in Afghanistan.

He eventually gained U.S. citizenship.



ABC7 is told that Perez died while visiting family in Mexico.
