CHICAGO (WLS) -- A wake was held on Monday in Durango, Mexico for Chicago-born teenager Kevin Gonzalez.

The 18-year-old died from colon cancer on Sunday, just hours after reuniting with his family.

Gonzalez's story made international headlines last week.

His parents were detained in Arizona while trying to cross into the U.S. illegally to be with their dying son in Chicago.

Kevin then went to Mexico in hopes of being reunited with them. That happened on Saturday after the Department of Homeland Security released his parents.

Gonzalez will be buried on Wednesday.
