Waukegan Ald. Juan Martinez assured residents there was no current danger to the public while also sending his prayers to the family of person shot and killed.
Ald. Martinez said in a statement there was a "police involved shooting that resulted in a fatality" in his 3rd Ward.
The police response and at least five evidence markers could be seen on the doorsteps of a home near Leith and Ridgeland in Waukegan.
Waukegan police confirmed three officers arrived at the location for a 58-year-old Waukegan resident who attempted to take his own life.
The officers were involved in a shooting, Waukegan police said. Police and firefighters provided assistance, but the man died of his injuries.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were not yet known. No one else was hurt.
Crime tape was wrapped around several homes. ABC7 also saw a Waukegan police cruiser towed away from the scene.
"The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is currently leading the investigation at the scene," Martinez said.
ABC7 has reached out to ISP to get more information about what happened, but has yet to hear back.
