Win free deep dish for a year: Pizzeria Due celebrates 70 years during National Pizza Month

CHICAGO (WLS) -- One of Chicago's most iconic pizza spots is celebrating a big slice of history this month.

As part of ABC7's "Pizza Power" series honoring National Pizza Month, Pizzeria Due is marking 70 years of serving up its legendary deep dish. The sister restaurant to Pizzeria Uno, where Chicago-style deep dish was first created in 1943, opened in 1955 at 619 N. Wabash Ave., and quickly became a downtown staple.

General Manager Rachel Mihich joined ABC7 Chicago's morning show Thursday to share the restaurant's rich history and what makes their deep dish so special. "It's the buttery crust, chunky tomato sauce and the layers of cheese, it's a true Chicago original," Mihich said.

To celebrate its milestone anniversary, Pizzeria Due is hosting a 70th birthday party on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring live local music, a deep dish pizza cooking demo, and a partnership with Goose Island Beer Co. Guests can also look forward to a cake and pizza-cutting ceremony honoring the restaurant's seven decades in the Windy City.

Leading up to the party, fans can enter a contest to win prizes including:

  • Free deep dish pizza for a year
  • Tickets to an invite-only anniversary party
  • Spots in an upcoming Deep Dish Pizza Cooking Class
  • Entries close Friday, Oct. 17, and winners will be announced that day.
