Keeping food safe for summer

Sunday, July 9, 2017
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Whether you're at a cookout or just enjoying the summer sun, it's important to keep your food safe as you eat outdoors. Temperature is critical: make sure you keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Thermometers can help you keep an accurate reading of the safety of your food. Vitamin D from food is also very important during the summer months. Sunscreen with SPF above #8 blocks vitamin D absorption, so eating D-rich foods will boost your immune system. And some seemingly healthy foods, like those found in paleo and vegan diets, can carry health halos; meaning they may lack certain nutrients the body needs to thrive. Registered Dietitian Pat Baird visited Eyewitness News to talk about the importance of healthy and safe eating for summer.
