Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sigma Gamma Rho sororities celebrate 100 years with events across country

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The chapter was chartered on November 5, 2022. They say they're the oldest graduate chapter in Chicago.

The women focus on helping others through health fairs, backpack donations, and scholarships.

Centennial celebrations are planned throughout the weekend in Chicago,

The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated are also celebrating 100 years of scholarship, sisterhood and service.



In 1922, seven young educators founded the sorority at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is the only historically Black Greek sorority with the National Pan-Hellenic Council to be founded at a predominantly white institution. They say they're the oldest graduate chapter in Chicago.

There are centennial celebration events happening Saturday across the country and in Chicago at Alhambra Palace in the West Loop.

Chicagoland chapters are hosting that event called The 22 Karat Golden Soiree. It's open to the public but registration is required.
