CHICAGO (WLS) -- May 15 marks the "frost-free date" for the Chicago area, meaning it should be safe to start blooming your garden.

Horticulturist Jennifer Brennan says May 15 is a good time to plant Geraniums, Salvia, Impatiens, Begonias, Cannas, Tomatoes. Peppers, Squash and Cucumbers.

As for flowers, Brennan says roses are also perfect for this time of year.

It's best to fertilize your lawn from May 15 to June 15.

If there is more that 30% weed coverage, use a "weed & feed". If there are less weeds, spot spray with a liquid herbicide after using a lawn fertilizer.
