This November, Chicago voters will select the members of the city's first fully elected school board.
As the race heats up, Illinois Answers Project, along with a citywide reporting collaborative, is tracking campaign finance records and following the money.
Their analysis found groups on all sides of the election are using nonprofits and super Political Action Committees to sidestep campaign contribution limits and hide the identities of major donors.
So far, candidates have raised around $1.8 million, but that's only part of the money flowing into the race.
A group of deep-pocketed business executives and major political donors are also pouring money into the election.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union is doling out money for candidates' legal fights and petition-gathering efforts.
