Community remembers student who died in HS bathroom fight

WILMINGTON -- Family and friends gathered on Sunday night to pay tribute to a teenager from Wilmington who died after being attacked inside a bathroom in her own school.

There wasn't a dry eye at St. Paul UAME Church in Wilmington, where hundreds gathered to remember 16-year-old Amy Joyner-Francis.

The student from the Howard High School of Technology died on April 21st after the assault.

"She was a really sweet girl," said classmate Carinna Vega. "It's just like, wow. She's gone, and she's never going to come back.'"

No charges have been filed in the attack, and Wilmington police addressed the media on Friday to remind the public that the investigation will take time.

The incident was apparently captured on cell phone video, but investigators say there are many interviews and other pieces of evidence to comb through.

"I teach in the school system. There's no discipline. That's crazy, that's not normal to do that to someone. She was unrecognizable," said substitute teacher Marsha McDuffy.

Friends of the family say patience in the community is wearing thin.

"You can't just have people do that anywhere and think 'oh it's ok, you're just going to get a slap on the wrist and go on about their business,'" said Kevon Gray. "They got suspended. That was the problem right there, they should have been expelled."

Authorities have indicated charges are coming, but stressed they wouldn't rush the investigation.
