Flames engulf Archer Heights facility housing fire extinguisher manufacturer

CHICAGO (WLS) -- More than 150 firefighters battled an extra-alarm warehouse blaze that burned for hours overnight in Chicago's Archer Heights neighborhood.

The fire is out, but hazardous materials teams are stationed outside the warehouse because there are chemicals inside. The facility, located in the 3800-block of West 38th Street, houses a company that manufactures fire extinguishers, among other businesses.

The building caught fire just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday and was quickly engulfed. Firefighters said they could see billowing smoke and flames from the Stevenson Expressway near Pulaski Road long before they arrived at the scene.

Crews had six engines feeding each other to bring water from more than half a mile away. The blaze was struck around midnight.

Fire officials said the flames did not spread to any other buildings. No one was hurt.

Investigators are looking into what sparked the fire.
