More than half of the patients in hospitals worldwide are believed to be at risk of developing blood clots. But they reportedly aren't receiving treatments that could prevent the condition.

The study in the Journal Lancet found blot clots have long been recognized to be one of the most common avoidable causes of death associated with a hospital stay. They can result in blockage of blood vessels in the leg, or the blockage of a lung artery that can sometimes be fatal.

Experts say steps can and should be taken to reduce danger to patients.
