Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace have been under scrutiny as hotbeds of harassment and hunting grounds for sexual predators. But a new study finds children are more likely to be harassed via instant messaging or in chat rooms.

The study in the February issue of Pediatrics also found most young internet users navigate the web and social networking sites without being victimized.

Experts say the findings show parents need to stop focusing on specific applications and start paying attention to the child as a whole.
