Firefighters rescue couple from West Side fire

CHICAGO The fire started in the back stairs of a building located on North Keystone and Cortland.

The families that lived in the basement, first and second floor units got out safely. But smoke and flames trapped the couple that called the attic unit home. They were forced out onto the roof where they waited for firefighters to rescue them.

"In one minute the whole house was already lit up. I thought we were not going to make it. I lost everything, but I'm alive, so I have to be grateful for that," said Lydia Crespo, rescued resident.

Investigators continue to search for the source of the fire. They say it appears suspicious.

A police officer and a firefighter suffered minor injuries.
