Four people escaped an overnight apartment building fire on the city's South Side. Two of them are seriously hurt. The fire broke out in a building on East 81st Street Monday around 2 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames sweeping through the 2nd floor.

Two victims were brought down a ladder. Two others who had already gotten out are now hospitalized in serious to critical condition.

The fire left the building's other residents homeless.

Firefighters say that there were smoke detectors in the hallways but few in the actual apartments.
