Man killed by car, daughter saved on South Side

CHICAGO Her life may have been saved by her father, who tried to shield her from the out of control car and was killed.

Joseph Richardson, 39, and his 4-year-old daughter, Kaniyah, were walking on a sidewalk near 95th Street and LaSalle at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday. A car jumped the curb and pinned them both against a fence.

Witnesses say Richardson held his daughter up to protect her from the impact.

The 39-year-old man sang in the choir at two South Side churches. He is being remembered as a family man who loved music.

"[He was a] nice young man, loyal and obedient, never had trouble out of him. He was faithful and dedicated to his job," said Bishop Roosevelt Adams of the Cottage Grove Holy Temple Church.

Police had one person in custody in connection with the crash Tuesday evening but no charges had been filed.
