Some Near Northwest Side residents escaped their burning apartment building early Wednesday morning. Families woke up to smoke alarms just after midnight. Flames and smoke had already engulfed the three-story building on North Western Avenue.

One man jumped out of a second-story window and landed on a car port.

Police helped a man who already had a broken leg down a ladder.

At least fifteen people and their pets got out safely.

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire.
