Thyroid problems linked to heart disease risk

People with underactive or overactive thyroid without symptoms appear to have a modestly increased risk of heart disease. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that these patients have an 18 to 19 percent higher risk of suffering a heart related death.

Researchers are still trying to understand why an overactive or underactive thyroid affects the heart.

They are calling for more research to determine if the heart risk goes away once the thyroid condition is treated.
