Vitamin D deficiency linked to back pain

A new study examined nearly 1,000 people ages 65 and older.

Fifty-eight percent of the women and 27 percent of the men had moderate pain in at least one region of the body.

For men, there was no relationship between Vitamin D levels and pain, but women with Vitamin D deficiency were nearly twice as likely to have back pain, while Vitamin S status was not related to pain in other body parts.

Researchers say lack of the vitamin can cause bone softening, which is more common in women.

The study appears in the journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
