Vitamin D deficiencies impact lifespan

People with vitamin D deficiencies will likely die sooner than people with high levels of the vitamin, says Austrian researchers. A follow up program with the same patients eight years later found a quarter of the volunteers with the lowest vitamin D levels were more likely to have died regardless of the primary reason for death.

Moderate exposure to sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D. It is also found in salmon and can be a milk additive.

The findings were reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
