American said it will reduce departures at O'Hare by 28 flights and sister airline American Eagle would cut 34 flights, beginning in September.
By November, American's presence at O'Hare will shrink by 13-percent, just in time for Thanksgiving travel.
Large cuts are also planned for Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, St. Louis and New York's Laguardia.
American expects to eliminate thousands of jobs as a result of fewer flights.
