The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $5.2 million to Chicago Public Schools to create smaller learning communities, also called "schools within schools."

The money will be divided between Foreman, Kelvyn Park, Manley Career Academy and Schurz high schools.

The school communities will have a team of teachers closely monitor the progress of one particular group of students. They'll work to identify problems early and develop ways to resolve those issues.

There are currently five smaller learning communities inside Chicago Public Schools.
