New research is debunking stereotypes that overweight workers are lazier, more emotionally unstable and harder to get along with than more fit co-workers.Researchers at Michigan State University studied the relationship between body weight and personality traits. Findings show that overweight and obese adults were not found to be less conscientious, agreeable, extraverted or emotionally stable.

The results of the study may encourage employers to not use weight based stereotypes when it comes to hiring, promoting or firing.

The study appears in the journal Group and Organization Management.
