University survey shows birthday binging

Researchers from the University of Missouri surveyed 2,500 college students.

More than four out of five said they drank alcohol on their 21st birthday. Many admitted to binge drinking sometimes in excess of 30 to 50 drinks in a single day.

Researchers say this pushes blood alcohol levels into dangerous territory, between three and four times the legal limit.

That can result in liver damage, a coma or even death.

Experts say students need to be warned that their one-day binge could lead to long lasting problems.
