More than four out of five said they drank alcohol on their 21st birthday. Many admitted to binge drinking sometimes in excess of 30 to 50 drinks in a single day.
Researchers say this pushes blood alcohol levels into dangerous territory, between three and four times the legal limit.
That can result in liver damage, a coma or even death.
Experts say students need to be warned that their one-day binge could lead to long lasting problems.
