1 killed, several hurt in West Side crash

CHICAGO A green GMC van lost control, hit a silver Dodge Stratus and then went up onto the curb and hit a bicyclist at the intersection of Pulaski and Madison about 7:30 a.m. The bicyclist was critically injured. A pedestrian, 55-year-old Johnny Bell, was killed. A third pedestrian suffered minor injury.

The intersection was closed off for about two hours.

The drivers of the two vehicles were rushed to the hospital. Investigators were on the scene for most of the morning.

One witness described the scene just after the accident happened.

"When I looked up and I saw the ambulance sitting there, they were just standing there for a minute. They didn't want nobody to see it. So they closed the door. I looked up. That was it. That's what I saw. Next set of people in the van, they was hurt pretty bad, too," said Leon James, witness.

One of the drivers was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Another was taken to West Suburban Medical Center. They are expected to recover. All the victims in this accident are adults.
