Gary hires new police chief

GARY It's the fourth chief in the last 15 months.

Mayor Rudy Clay promoted Lieutenant Reginald Harris to head up the police department effective immediately.

Harris is a 22-year veteran of the Gary police force. He's been a commander, supervisor and patrol officer.

Interim chief Larry Wright will be reassigned. Wright was appointed interim chief in March, following the abrupt retirement of Thomas Houston.

Houston retired just after being indicted for allegedly abusing the civil rights of four suspects who were arrested in a burglary of his home.
