Gastric bypass may cure metabolic syndrome

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic evaluated more than 300 patients who met at least three of five metabolic syndrome criteria and were considering bypass surgery. Of the 180 patients who had the surgery, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was decreased by 58 percent over three and a half years.

Among the 157 patients who did not have the surgery, the drop was just 10 percent.

The research findings are reported in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
