Town to use rum, vodka byproducts to melt snow

The cost of road salt is up- and it's harder to find, so one Kane County community is using an alternative to melt snow and ice. Officials in Pingree Grove, which is northwest of Elgin, are going to try Magic Minus Zero. It looks and smells like soy sauce and is made from the byproducts of rum and vodka, then mixed with magnesium chloride.

When combined with rock salt, it's supposed to melt snow and ice faster than salt alone. It's non-toxic, biodegradable and won't corrode equipment or roads.
