Civil rights leader dies at 82

Cirilo McSween was a pallbearer at the 1968 funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A resident of the Hyde Park community, he was an active member in several civil rights groups.

McSween was the first African American to be hired by a major insurance company. In the late 1950s, he sold more than $1 million worth of policies in one year alone.

He also operated five McDonald's franchises, including the restaurants at O'Hare airport.

McSween died Wednesday in a Little Rock, Ark., hospital where he was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.
