Metal theft on the rise in Chicago

A video highlighting the problem was played during a news conference.

The prices of copper and aluminum have skyrocketed in the last five years. So, thieves are stealing wire and other items and selling it to scrap metal recyclers.

The problem is not confined to one area.

"Basically, we have 25 districts. I think every district has had some type of metal theft ranging from copper flower pots to copper gutters, siding on houses, " said Sgt. Bryan Rybka of the Chicago police.

Officers will receive training during role call during this week on how to catch thieves.
