Two high school seniors killed in crash

SUGAR GROVE It happened Thursday near Sugar Grove in unincorporated Kaneville Township. The students were apparently heading to Kaneland High School in Maple Park.

Seventeen-year-old Blake Denton and 17-year-old Jeffery Malewig were seniors at the school.

Their classmates held a vigil for them Thursday night at the Village Bible Church in Sugar Grove. They remembered the two as great athletes and good friends. The school has assembled a crisis team to help grieving students.

Denton, of Sugar Grove, was driving a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Harter Road about 9:15 a.m. when the car crossed over the center lane, left the roadway and struck a tree along the west side of Harter, according to a release from the Kane County Sheriff's Department.

The accident occurred near Lorang Road near 3S480 Harter Rd. in Kaneville Township.

Malewig, of Sugar Grove, a passenger in the car, died on the scene. Denton was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he later died.

A crisis team has been assembled at the school.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, the release said.
