People celebrate activist's life

Turner described herself as a writer and fighter who was one of the first writers of the South Street Journal newspaper. She eventually became an associate editor.

Dignitaries including the Rev. Jesse Jackson remembered her legacy on Friday.

Throughout her life, Turner addressed many issues and was the creator of the "ghetto bus tour." She took scholars and students to public housing complexes.

Turner suffered an aneurysm, fell into a coma and never woke up. She was 51 years old.
