Mayor Daley spoke out Saturday on the impeachment of Gov. Rod Blagojevich by the Illinois House, calling it a sad day.

State representatives voted 114 to 1 Friday to impeach a governor for the first time ever in Illinois.

Blagojevich was arrested December 9, 2008 on federal criminal charges. It is alleged he was trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder.

"The trial takes place in the Senate, and I think they're going to be very cautious and very professional and very fair about the presentation of evidence. And, it's serious. It's a very serious step in the history of government in this country," Daley said.

The mayor declined to say whether he thinks the governor should resign.
