Massive credit card security breach

A massive security breach involves an unknown number of credit cards. Heartland Payment Systems says thieves hacked into computers used to process $100 million payment card transactions each month. They process transactions for 175,000 stores and restaurants. Heartland says it cannot estimate how many customer records may have been compromised.

Experts believe the breach could be the largest, surpassing the 2007 computer hacking incident that compromised 94 million TJX customer records.

Heartland discovered the breach last week after Visa and MasterCard notified it about suspicious transactions linked to its processing system.

Heartland says it will notify each customer whose data was stolen but has not said how long that process could take.
