Investigators were not able to get fingerprints from the gun, which had been reported stolen before the shooting.
The boy's mother was in the house at the time. She told police she had never seen the gun.
FBI agents determined the boy could have shot himself, but the jury in Will County was not so sure.
The cause of death remains undetermined.
