Study: Chemical BPA lingers in the body

A controversial chemical that received a lot of attention because it's found in baby bottles now appears to last longer in the body than previously thought. Bisphenol A exposure has been linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and developmental problems.

BPA is used to harden plastics for food containers.

The findings suggest that exposure to BPA may come from different sources, not just food products or that the body doesn't metabolize the chemicals as fast as has been thought.

One possibility, scientists say, is that people are exposed to more BPA from tap water, or house dust, or that BPA gets "hung up" in fat cells in the body.
