Insomnia could lead to weight gain

New research suggests a reason why sleep deprivation might lead to weight gain and even obesity. The answer may have to with the hormone ghrelin, which is linked to appetite control.

Researchers at UCLA say men suffering from insomnia show fluctuations in ghrelin levels between nighttime and day. Higher ghrelin levels during the day will boost appetite.

The altered hormone level among the insomniacs may play a roll in long term weight gain and obesity.

The study is published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
