Ford Motor's Chicago assembly plant was idle Monday and will remain shut down for the next three weeks. That means 1,400 local Ford workers are temporarily laid off.

The three-week stoppage comes as sales continue to lag behind production of numerous Ford brands.

The Chicago assembly plant makes Tauruses, Sables and the Lincoln MKS.

For the next month and a half, Ford is also offering buy-out packages to its union employees.
