Indy archbishop criticizes Notre Dame

April 14, 2009 (SOUTH BEND, Ind.) Protestors have expressed outrage that the president was invited to speak at the school's commencement and receive an honorary degree.

Archbishop Daniel Buechlein has released a statement saying he's "appalled and embarrassed by Notre Dame's invitation." He also said he is personally "stunned and angered" as well as "profoundly saddened" because the president supports abortion and federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Not all Roman Catholics agree.

"If you're any kind of Christian, I think you would be open to other people's opinions," said one Catholic woman who was not identified.

The president is scheduled to speak at Notre Dame's commencement on May 17th.
