Chicago garbage trucks may be overhauled

Trucks would take one-man crew
April 15, 2009 (CHICAGO) Unlike the current trucks, which use three man crews, the automated trucks require only a driver. The trucks have mechanical arms that will pick up carts and dump garbage into the truck's bin.

The city has not purchased the trucks yet, which would cost about $40 million.

The laborers union complains that the automatic system leaves garbage behind.

Opponents also say carts must line up properly or the driver has to move them into place.
