Statins do not combat dementia

April 20, 2009 Statin drugs are a commonly prescribed class of lipid lowering drugs, including Zocor and Crestor.

In an earlier review, two reports had described an association between statin therapy and a reduction rates of Alzheimer's by as much as 70 percent. However, this new study in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found they have no effect in preventing Alzheimer's or dementia.

Scientists did demonstrate that statins were not detrimental to cognition which had been another previous concern.
