Body weight could impact earth's climate

April 21, 2009 At least that's what researchers are suggesting in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

The theory is that overweight people eat more than thin people and are more likely to travel by car. Researchers say that puts extra strain on the environment.

It's estimated that each overweight person is responsible for about 1 ton of extra carbon dioxide emissions a year on average.

Scientists say reversing the global trend towards fatness could be a key factor in the battle to reduce emissions and slow climate change.
