A World War II bomber that has been sitting at the bottom of Lake Michigan for more than 60 years could be brought to the surface this week. The Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber crashed into Lake Michigan in the 1940's.

It's off the shoreline near Waukegan and will be brought up on Friday, weather permitting.

The plane was credited with winning the battle of Midway and turning the tide of the Pacific War in America's favor. It crashed during aircraft carrier qualification training.

More than 17,000 pilots completed the training, including former president George H. W. Bush.
