Neighbors told ABC7 that he lived with his aunt and little brother in an Englewood apartment. They said he was excited to go outside and play baseball in the warm weather at Fernwood Park.
The baseball accident happened about 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The fire department responded and tried to revive Maurice. He was transported to Christ Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
"He knocked on the door to get the baseball ball to go play baseball. It was at 3:30. I had just handed him the bat," said Loretta Milsap, Maurice's neighbor.
"He was a great friend," said Joe Hurdle, Maurice's friend.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
