House fire kills 1, injures 5

April 28, 2009 (CHICAGO) The fire broke out just before 6 a.m. Tuesday on West 35th Street near South Western.

Authorities say the fire started in the kitchen of a second-story apartment where the deceased victim was found.

Firefighters rescued several residents.

"Upon arrival, we had people hanging from the windows on (floors) two and three. We raised the ladders. We brought three down the ladders, and a male teenager jumped out of a window due to the heavy smoke conditions. He got up and ran away. So we completed our ladder raises and rescue," said Lt. Jerry Rodriguez, Chicago Fire Department.

Five people were hurt, and they were being treated for smoke inhalation.
