Women live longer, but may pay a price

May 5, 2009 A new study finds much of the excess disability is due to higher rates of obesity and arthritis.

A study presented at the American Geriatrics Society meeting in Chicago finds these disabilities reduce the quality of life during their senior years.

Researchers say this is important because it suggests that a woman's tendency to pack on extra pounds in their child bearing and perimenopausal years translates into loss of independence in their old age.
