Daley touts summer youth programs

Mayor: Activities will help police, parents keep kids safe
May 12, 2009 (CHICAGO) Chicago Mayor Richard Daley spoke to schools chief executive officer Ron Huberman before making the announcement Tuesday in Jackson Park. He said the programs will help police and parents keep children safe from summer violence.

"Providing these activities is more important this summer than ever before," said the mayor. "With families under more stress than ever because of the economy, we have to use every tool available to give our children alternatives to hanging out on street corners, or places they shouldn't be in the first place."

Daley said the activities cover education, language, technology, the arts, day camping, and sports, including a new track and field program.
