Government regulators want to make it easier for consumers to transfer a landline phone number to a rival service. The FCC voted in Wednesday to force phone companies to transfer or 'port' landline phone numbers within one business day instead of the current four-day wait.

Landline numbers can be transferred to competing landline services or to cell phones.

The new one-day transferring requirement should take effect in about a year.
