Daley taking blame for parking meter problems

May 19, 2009 (CHICAGO) Daley said he will take responsibility for the parking meter problems that surfaced after the city leased them to a private operator. This comes a day after alderman questioned officials from the private companies on issues such as broken meters and charging incorrect rates.

Daley explained there needed to be a longer transition before the takeover.

"I think they're correcting many of the things they've found out. It should have been a longer transition. It should have been a three month transition, that's one thing we've learned. Skyway, parking everything else worked it. It should have been a three-month transition into it, 'cause the parking meters were not in the best of shape," Mayor Daley said.

Chicago alderman approved the parking meter deal last December. The city will collect more than $1 billion.
