Ill. House passes texting-while-driving ban

May 28, 2009 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) On Thursday, the Illinois House passed the ban 92-to-25. It's now up to Governor Pat Quinn to decide whether the ban will become law.

The state senate approved the bill last week.

The legislation would also ban checking e-mails while driving. Drivers can still use portable devices while pulled over to the side of road or at a standstill in traffic.

The ban would not apply to reading directions from a navigation system.
